I fell asleep on the settee after the football match so now, half past three in the morning, I’m wide awake!
No point in wasting my time so I’ve converted the two standard gauge coaches to narrow gauge ready for use on the Cuarto Mail.
After replacing the coupling at one end of each coach with a hook made from a wire coat hanger I removed the SG wheelsets and made new narrow gauge sets using the bogies from an old Tri-ang coach.
These are attached to the underside of the new coaches using coffee stirrers and pieces of scrap plastic to get the right height. Alignment is by eye using the central ribs of the bogies and the holes in the coach’s axleboxes as guides.
The coaches are semi-permanently coupled using the wire hooks but have a Kadee knuckle at each end of the train for coupling to the loco.
The mail train is now ready for work on Monday morning. Nothing complicated, just some old toys bought cheaply on eBay, bits from the scrap box and an hour or so’s work, but the result is something different from everybody else’s train set and cannot be achieved just by opening a box… Railway modelling as it should be done.
