Train wreck in Sierra Oculta

FCPyF #57 departed from Cuarto de Pulgada at 5 minutes past mid-day heading light engine and van for Centrales. It failed to reach its destination.

The train, on a test run following civil engineering works between Cuarto de Pulgada and Rio Paleta, ran smoothly over the first bridge…

… and on past the curved section of the line to cross the second bridge…

57vandepart4The chief civil engineer was riding on the leading platform of the caboose at the time so he had a “front row seat” to watch what happened next.

57derailed1Derailments are common on the FCPyF, the track being frequently damaged by earthquakes and rock falls, but this one was not due to the usual causes.

The train travelled some distance before coming to a stand, having run out of track half way across the second bridge!

I’m guessing that the civil engineer’s department will not be expecting any Christmas bonuses this year.

Remember folks, railway modelling is meant to be fun!
